FUNDING CREATIVITY
AI has killed the creative industry at the same as setting it free
Unless you are familiar with open source and what might be possible with AI in the future, then read the AI Movie Making page first to get an idea of where I think it's headed, or the About page to see how I got to this point.
Speaking for my own situation, I have dozens of books, musicals, and stageplay ideas that I hope to realise into AI video form in the future. These will be big projects and will benefit from collaborations, which is where I think the movie-making industry is headed.
Like it or not, the future of having a career as a creative artist is as good as dead. Arguably, AI can do most things cheaper, faster, and better - music, art, design, and soon, movies.
But AI world will never stop humans being creative, it is in our nature. And creative people have always been funded by others support - their fans, partners, or sponsors. It's how it has always been, and it wont be changing in the future.
This is the Catch-22 of being a creative in a world where AI has killed the creative industry at the same as setting it free.
HOW I SEE "AI MOVIE MAKING" DEVELOPING
We can't yet easily make a convincing 1 hour movie with dialogue on a PC, but it wont be long before we can. At that point, what once took years and billions of $$$ in a Hollywood studio and set location with thousands of staff members, will be possible to make at home for very little cost. Big task, but possible.
I think inevitably the entire industry is going to become small and self-funding, but collaborative. It makes sense that it would. As such I want to consider how to achieve that now. I want to find the right team or teams of people ready, willing, and able, to pull this off.
This will of course require funding in some form for those involved. Whether it be bartering, hope of potential royalties, or sponsorship.
The beauty is that it wont cost billions, but will cost only a few hundred dollars to complete. In theory. Because that isn't accounting for the cost of time and energy creatives will have to put into it.
As I have said elsewhere and everywhere - time and energy are going to be the main cost of making AI movies in the future.
Open source or group funded movies will be how this likely develops. Maybe selling the final movie online via rental to re-coup costs.
If you can make a decent AI movie for a few thousand dollars, and impress people enough they'll pay the price of a coffee to watch it online via a website portal, that's going to be a winning formula.
We aren't there yet, but it's down the road.
SPONSORSHIP
Do you want to sponsor a future video or be listed as "Executive Producer" in the credits?
Since time and energy will be the main costs of AI movie making in the future, sponsorship will be one of the best ways to fund an AI movie, and it wont need to be a million dollars.
A full length, high quality, AI movie capable of rivalling anything from Netflix or Hollywood, will likely cost only a few thousand dollars to make in the future, and maybe even only a few hundred.
This lower price point will put funding a movie into the reach of a far wider group of interested potential sponsors than ever before. Remember the local ads we used to see at the Cinema before the main feature? Approaching Bob's local diner for an advertising spot, could soon be the best way to fund making an entire AI movie.
PRODUCT PLACEMENT
Do you want to feature your product in a future video?
From a drink, to clothing, to a design label, to a car, to a logo, to the name of your business, or even the interior of your cafe, house, favourite external location, or your wife. There are a number of ways to put these things into a short video.
From "Lora" training, to Gaussian Splatting, to basic 3D modelling from a set of photographs. All of which are already possible to achieve with very little effort.
CAMEO ROLES
Do you want to feature, or have someone feature, in a future video?
It isn't hard to train a "Lora" on a face or person. It requires ten to twenty photos taken from different angles with a few different expressions, then 4 to 12 hours of training and it is done. That can then be used to render a person into any video clip.
I featured myself (the bearded bloke in shades) in "The Name Of The Game Is Power" and it surprised me just how easy it was to do. I trained the Lora on only 4 or 5 face-only images and it worked perfectly in every shot I featured in.
CLOTHING DESIGNER
The same goes for clothing design. If you have ideas for an amazing style of clothing, why not consider putting those up for use in a future movie? Again this is done by training Loras on images of the clothing.
Off the top of my head, the first idea where I could make use of this is an 18th Century Vampire story I have planned, or "The Highwayman" which is a stage play I plan to work on when the software is up to it.
COLLABORATIONS AND OTHER TASKS
As the projects get bigger they will benefit from collaborations.
Below I list some of the tasks that I think will always be required. They could be done by groups of people collaborating on a project, or by one or two people with enough time and energy to devote to each task.
For me the balance will come between automating tasks using AI, and keeping the creative input and drive "human".
For example, I doubt I'll ever feature AI music in my films, but I will use AI vocals and AI synthesizer sounds. So, it's all about balance, not for moral reasons, but simply because AI can never replace the human creative decision-making process, not really. Humans will remain the arbiters and over-seers of the creative process.
Here are the areas I think human roles will always be needed. Though they could be covered by one person or many, they will still require some aspect of human decision-making.
- Director, co-ordinator
- Script writer
- Actors (voice and action) (With video-to-video production: record your action on a phone, v2v that into an AI environment, replace it with new characters)
- Voice overs (good sounding voice tone, or a good voice actor to drive the AI voice model, both will be needed)
- Music
- Sound and sound effects design
- Marketing & advertising
- Sponsorship, financing, Productplacement
- Cloud hardware for batch rendering video.
- Base image artwork design
- Video editors & colourists (colorists if American)
- Video FX
- Lora training (characters, costumes, action)
- Set design (3D environments such as Gaussian Splats or 3D modelling a space for cameras to be positioned in, that the characters are later added into)
